medien.KUNSTLABOR Kunsthaus Graz is pleased to announce ubermorgen:
"*THE*AGENCY* [for manual Election Recounts]", a concept
exhibition about democracy, the U.S. of A. and their form of democracy,
their elections, ballots & election machines, power of government
and media terror. The austrian-swiss-american artist group exhibits
computer works, drawings, collage and an installation, as well as
two performances during the exhibition nov 2 - nov 30, 2004. "*THE*AGENCY*"
was curated by Franz Xaver, director of medien.KUNSTLABOR.
lizvlx and Hans Bernhard work as ubermorgen since 1998, they create
their artistic work out of the leftovers and stepovers of Net.Art
and its inherently system-critical dispositive, as well as from
the so-called "post pop-culture" like formula I and governemental
documents. During the last years, ubermorgen has focused on the
conception and realization of projects which are "on the edge
of the law" and they have been persecuted by both U.S. and
diverse European police groups. ubermorgen have been participating
in exhibitions in galleries and museeums worldwide, they became
internationally popular through their "Media Hacks" and
"Legal Art" actions such as "Voteauction", "NAZI~LINE"
[with Christoph Schlingensief], "Injunction Generator / Ipnic.org"
and "Bmdi.de".
Computerworks
"*THE*AGENCY*" also exists as a web-piece: http://www.ubermorgen.com/*THE*AGENCY*.
The graphics on the website illustrate the title of the exhibition:
" *THE*AGENCY* [for manual Election Recounts]" and exhibit
the almost sceletal remains of governemental remains of power in
the form of a seal. The raw and rough quality of the seal finally
shows the .... approach of the U.S. government and its institutions
in dealing with media, war and reality.
Drawings/Tapestry
The above described seal can be found within the exhibition in the
form of a postmodern tapestry [textile marker on IKEA-carpet]. The
use of industrially manufactured materials, similar to ubermorgens
"Pixelpaintings" series of the last years, is a trademark
of ubermorgen - they challenge the applied art aspects of modern
artworks.
Collage
The extensive windowspaces of the gallery will be covered with computer
prints and collages. The citizens of Graz can only partially see
into the gallery and the exhibition captures the public space surrounding
the gallery.
Performance I
Two days after Election Day, on November 4 2004, visitors of the
gallery can buy and cast 46 votes (overseas absentee ballots) for
the state of Florida. for their own savety, they have to wear protective
clothing (gloves, hair net, facial protection) in order to avoid
leaving personal traces (fingerprints, hairs, saliva). All ballots
have been gathered by ubermorgen via the U.S. election plattform
"Overseasvote2004" [https://www.overseasvote2004.com ubermorgen
used social security numbers available on the internet to be eligible
for those ballots. In the state of Florida, absentee ballots can
arrive at the county clerk until 14 days after election day, nach
dem Wahltag einlangen, that way all ballots at ubermorgens exhibition
can take official part in the election.
The performance and exhibition will feature the sale of actual florida
absentee voting ballots [we have ordered these via overseasvote2004.com]
with U.S. social security numbers] and a RECOUNT of digitally casted
miami-dade county votes [2004 presidential election bush vs. kerry]
